Principles and Applications of Resistance Training

Principles and Applications of Resistance Training

This course aims to increase awareness, understanding and confidence in prescribing resistance training (RT) to patients with cardiovascular disease

This 1 day course is aimed at all healthcare professionals (e.g. physiotherapists, nurses) involved in the delivery of exercise to the cardiovascular population who wish to expand their knowledge to include resistance training. It is an opportunity to explore the theory and principles of resistance training and includes both a theoretical and practical component. Knowledge gained will enable safe and effective practice which can be implemented in future service delivery.

Whilst this course aims to review the evidence base and to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical advice on exercise prescription for resistance training in cardiovascular patients, it is not formally assessed and therefore does not serve as a specialist qualification to lead, prescribe or deliver the exercise component of cardiac rehabilitation.

Programme content includes:

  • Introduction to Resistance Training (RT)
  • Assessment, Prescription and Programming for RT
  • Rep max theory and practice
  • Instruction, Progression and Regression programming
